Social networking proving important for locating Chile's missing victims

In the aftermath of the earthquake on February 27, social networking sites are demonstrating their importance in Chileans' search for missing family members and friends. Despite sporadic access to electricity and internet in the wake of the disaster, social networks were able to mobilize their services quickly to aid in the recovery efforts, according to the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas.

Facebook and Twitter continue to serve as a means of communication with loved ones and also as a source of news. Google has also established a Person Finder, where individuals can seek out or report information about missing people. Additionally, journalists and citizens are updating blogs with new information about the disaster as it develops.
