Around the world, digital media ventures are successfully embracing new technology while providing engaging content and maintaining high journalistic standards. Making a profit off of these ventures, however, remains a challenge.
Last week, Spain’s innovative online newspaper Soitu.es shut down after almost two years of success. Soitu.es achieved recognition among audiences worldwide, was followed by over a million unique visitors and won international awards for its editorial and technical innovations. For investor BBVA Bank, however, these accolades were not enough. After seeing little revenue, the bank finally cut the investment.
Are there digital media ventures in your region that have successful models? Do you think there is a future for profitable digital journalism?

With more and more information coming up on a daily basis and with the daily strenght of information technology, journalism may as well fail to survive the digital environment. Also with dwindling purchasing power due largly to the global economic meltdown, journalism can only survive by creating more awareness about the need to read, improving the reading culture especially among the youths. It should also devise means by which the printed pages can be subsidized. This is of course an up hill task.

Like newspapering evolved centuries back, digital journalism is rapidly evolving. It will not only survive but will also overtake the conventional newsroom. Why? It is less cost intensive - an editor with just a laptop in a tiny room/car could command a large number of freelancers and writers, and publish more rapidly than the conventional newsroom with a workforce of 700 passengers. Again, people searching for vital information presently pay to log in depending on how newsy the site. In Nigeria, six out of 10 educated young men have laptops and are privately connected to the internet. Many youths make use of the cyber cafe to locate specific information. They pay to do so.
However, the rural population will be excluded from digital information dissemination. But again, most newspapers in Nigeria circulate only in the cities. Digital may reach the rural communities faster and easier with the new era information technology.

For the media to thrive, it must first of all have an audience before attracting advertising patronage. Unfortunately for the third world, information technology is accessible to less than 5% of the people and so digital media is virtually non-existent. The few digital media outlets that exist in countries like mine are but appendages to the print or audio-visual media owned by the same media houses. It thus goes without saying that if digital media, (which is the latest information medium in the market place) is already having existence problems in first world countries, those in the third world are virtually condemned to still birth.

In this digital world--digital journalism is getting the place in the hands of the digital people; especially who have internet. Many people do not have the time to read a printed newspaper, rather they like to go through online. In addition, many people like to read one more newspapers and they browse through internet. And the number of online readers are increasing. Therefore, we can be hopeful about publishing online/ digital newspapers and its sustainability. But for inceasing the number of eduacted people--circulation of printed newspapers are being large. So, there are opportunities to survive journalism both online and printed.

Even now newspapers grow faster in developing countries like India. In a small province like Kerala 2.5 million people subscribe to newspapers everyday. (population: about 30 million). Rural masses still now depend upon vernacular dailies to know what is going around. English dailies may find it difficult to grow more. In north India Hindi lan guage papers registered a record growth in recent times. Next to Times of India, Indai has largest circulated dailies like Dainik jagaran, Dainik bhaskar, Eenadu, dinathanthi printed in regional languages and each paper having more than one million circulation a day. All these papers have effectively utilised the popularity of digital media. The web editons of these newspaper organisations gets hits from across the globe. By grabing online advertisements they make more revenue too.
During this generation, in where economy are suffering from its crisis, business are primarily affected. It is possible to make money in the stock market – duh; why do you think Warren Buffet is so rich? However, the average dividends from stock market investments is something on the order of the low teens, on average (about 12% give or take) but they are a vital part of any investment portfolio. Given market volatility, you want to "watch the basket" so to speak – buy low, sell high, although that's common sense. It's also a good idea to maintain a diverse spread in order to minimize risks, and therefore be able to make money off of any investment you have in the stock market – and obviously, skip any IPOs on an underwater basket weaving company.
